Game day IPTV checklist: no lag at kickoff

Big games are the busiest moment for every home network. Set yourself up so the stream holds when it matters.

Kickoff is the worst moment for home internet: everyone in your area streams at once. Most stutter during big games comes from the home side, and most of it is fixable with a little preparation.

The day before

  1. Check your setup on the same channel type you will watch, in the evening.
  2. Update your player app and your device. Updates at game time are a bad surprise.
  3. Plan the connection: a network cable beats any Wi-Fi.

One hour before

  1. Restart the router and the TV device.
  2. Pause big downloads: game consoles, cloud backups, phone updates.
  3. Set the player buffer to Large.
  4. Check the game time on our games schedule, shown in your own time zone.

During the game

  • If the stream stutters, try another version of the same channel before anything else.
  • A slightly lower quality version often plays perfectly when the network is busy.
  • Do not restart the app at the first stutter. Give the buffer 20 seconds to recover.

Still lagging?

Post your device, app and connection in the Sports and Live Events forum. Someone with the same setup has probably fixed it already.

Questions people ask

Why does IPTV buffer only during big games?

Game time is peak time for home internet in your whole area. A cable connection and a larger player buffer fix most of it.
