TiviMate Not Loading EPG — 5 Fixes That Actually Work

By Daisy ·

TiviMate’s EPG (Electronic Program Guide) is what shows you what’s on each channel. When it stops working, the app becomes nearly unusable — you’re flipping channels blind. Here’s how to fix it in order of how likely each cause is.

TL;DR

EPG not loading is almost always one of: (1) wrong EPG URL format, (2) EPG source is temporarily offline, (3) timezone mismatch between provider and device, (4) cache corruption, or (5) provider doesn’t actually include EPG data. Try these in order and you’ll have it fixed in 5 minutes.

Fix #1 — Force-refresh the EPG manually

Before assuming anything is broken, force TiviMate to re-download the guide.

Steps:

  1. Open TiviMate → Settings (the gear icon)
  2. Navigate to Playlists → your playlist name
  3. Click EPG sources → tap your EPG source
  4. Click “Update now”
  5. Wait for the download to complete (10-60 seconds depending on size)

If this works, you’re done. If it says “Failed to update” or finishes but still shows no guide, continue to Fix #2.

Fix #2 — Verify the EPG URL is correct

Most EPG failures come from copy-paste errors in the URL.

How to check:

  • EPG URLs end in .xml, .xml.gz, or .epg
  • They typically look like: http://provider.com/xmltv.php?username=YOUR_USERNAME&password=YOUR_PASSWORD
  • Make sure there are no extra spaces at the start or end
  • Check that your username/password are URL-encoded if they contain special characters

Common mistake: people paste the M3U URL into the EPG field. The M3U is the channel list. The EPG is the schedule data — they’re separate URLs.

Contact your IPTV provider and ask specifically for “the XMLTV EPG URL.” Don’t accept “use the M3U URL” — that’s wrong, and providers who tell you that often don’t have proper EPG data.

Fix #3 — Set your timezone correctly

This causes 30% of “EPG appears empty” reports. The EPG loads successfully but shows blank because the timezone is wrong — programs are scheduled, but for a different time of day.

To fix:

  1. TiviMate Settings → General → Timezone
  2. Set to your actual timezone (not GMT)
  3. Settings → Playlists → EPG sources → “Update now” again

If your provider’s EPG is in UTC and you’re in EST (UTC-5), every program shifts by 5 hours unless TiviMate knows your timezone.

Fix #4 — Clear TiviMate’s cache

Cached EPG data can get corrupted, especially after Fire OS updates.

On Firestick:

  1. Hold the home button → Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications
  2. Select TiviMate
  3. Clear Cache (not Clear Data — that signs you out)
  4. Reopen TiviMate
  5. Force EPG refresh again

On Android TV: Same flow — Settings → Apps → TiviMate → Clear Cache.

Fix #5 — Switch to a different EPG source

Some providers’ EPG sources are unreliable. There are free public EPG sources you can use as a backup.

To add a backup EPG:

  1. TiviMate Settings → Playlists → EPG sources → Add
  2. Try one of these public sources:

https://epg.pw/xmltv/epg.xml (worldwide)

http://epg.51zmt.top:8000/e.xml (Asia) – https://epgshare01.online/epgshare01/epg_ripper_US1.xml.gz (US channels)

  1. Save and update

Public EPG sources match channels by name, so they’re not always perfect — but they’re often more reliable than provider-supplied EPGs for major channels.

The “provider doesn’t have EPG” problem

Some IPTV providers don’t actually offer EPG data — they just promise it. If you’ve tried all 5 fixes above and the EPG still shows nothing, your provider might be the problem.

How to test: ask your provider directly for the XMLTV URL. If they:

  • Send a URL → test it
  • Say “use the M3U URL” → they don’t have proper EPG
  • Say “EPG is coming soon” → they don’t have EPG
  • Stop responding → time to switch providers

This is one of the things we test for in our Best IPTV reviews. All three of our top picks (LemonRealm, Prv8Sup, USATVCast) include proper XMLTV EPG with their subscriptions.

Bonus — Improve EPG performance

If the EPG loads but is slow:

Reduce EPG history: TiviMate Settings → EPG → “Past days” → set to 1 (default is often 7).

Reduce EPG future days: Same menu → “Future days” → set to 3 (default is 7).

Smaller EPG = faster loading, less RAM use. You rarely need 7 days of past programming anyway.

What TiviMate alternatives are worth trying?

If TiviMate’s EPG issues persist, two alternatives handle EPG slightly differently:

  • IPTV Smarters Pro — more forgiving with non-standard EPG formats
  • OTT Navigator — advanced EPG handling with multiple sources merged together
  • iBoPlayer Pro — works on Samsung/LG smart TVs natively, but EPG support varies (more on this in our iBoPlayer review)

For 95% of users, TiviMate is still the best player. These alternatives only make sense if you’ve exhausted all 5 fixes above.
