Why we test these specifically for streaming

Most VPN reviews online treat streaming as an afterthought. They benchmark on a wired desktop connection, list "5,000 servers" as a feature, and call it a day.

That's not how anyone actually uses these. People stream on Firestick, Android TV, Shield Pro, smart TVs — devices with weak Wi-Fi antennas, aggressive background-task killing, and TV apps that fight with VPN kill switches. A VPN that benchmarks at 1.2 Gbps on a wired Mac might drop to 200 Mbps on a Firestick. We don't care about the Mac number.

Our test setup:

What we measured (and why it matters)

Speed retention

How much of the base 952 Mbps survives the VPN tunnel? Most VPNs lose 10-25%. The bad ones lose 40-60%, which makes 4K streaming impossible. Our top pick (NordVPN) retained 94% on average — 892 Mbps on a closest-server connection.

Kill switch reliability

When the VPN drops, does your traffic actually stop, or does the device leak a few seconds of unprotected data? We tested this by forcibly killing the VPN process while streaming and checking how long it took to disconnect from the source. NordVPN re-engaged in under 200ms. Some other VPNs took 8-10 seconds — long enough to leak your real IP to a streaming server.

Streaming compatibility

Does the VPN actually unblock services like Netflix US, BBC iPlayer, and Disney+? We tested each major library. NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark all unblocked everything we threw at them. The other 6 missed at least one major service.

Firestick app quality

Does it have a native Firestick app, or do you have to sideload? Sideloaded VPNs work but are clunky — they don't auto-connect on boot, their kill switches are unreliable, and they crash more often. All 5 of our top-ranked providers have native Firestick apps. We dropped 4 providers from this list because of poor Firestick experiences.

Real-world streaming behavior

Beyond benchmarks: does 4K HDR content play smoothly through the VPN? Does the VPN drop mid-stream when the Firestick goes to sleep and wakes back up? Do Real-Debrid sources still load fast? These are the things that actually matter to a streamer, and they're what most reviews miss.

NordVPN won every category that matters for streaming. Highest speed retention. Most reliable kill switch. Largest server network. Native apps for every device we tested. The Threat Protection feature blocks malware and tracker domains without breaking streaming apps — surprisingly rare.

Two things specifically worth calling out: First, NordLynx (their WireGuard implementation) is genuinely fast — most providers brand WireGuard but throttle it. Second, the kill switch re-engages after sleep/wake, which is a real-world Firestick issue most reviews don't catch because they only test on desktops.

Only downside: the apps default to "Quick Connect," which sometimes routes you to a slow server. Manually pick a server in your country for best results.

ExpressVPN is fast, reliable, and has the best customer support in the industry. The Firestick app is polished and stable. Lightway (their proprietary protocol) is competitive with NordLynx.

The catch: it costs nearly 3× as much as NordVPN. For that premium, you get marginally better customer support and a slightly more refined interface. For most streaming use cases, that's not worth the price difference.

Get ExpressVPN if you need 24/7 live chat support, dislike "discounted" pricing models, or want the most polished app experience. Get NordVPN if you just want the best performance for the lowest price.

🥉 Surfshark — Best Budget Option

Surfshark's headline feature: unlimited simultaneous connections. Every other major VPN limits you to 5-10 devices. With Surfshark, your phone, Firestick, laptop, partner's devices, kids' tablets, all on one account.

Speed retention is the weakest of our top 3 — 72% vs NordVPN's 94%. For most use cases this is fine, but on a slower base connection (say, 200 Mbps), Surfshark could drop you below 4K streaming threshold while NordVPN wouldn't.

Get Surfshark if you have a large household with many devices and a fast base connection. Otherwise NordVPN is the better pick.

Proton VPN — Best for Privacy

Proton's reputation for privacy is well-earned — Swiss jurisdiction, no-logs audited, encrypted email infrastructure. For pure streaming use, it's not as fast as NordVPN. For users who genuinely prioritize privacy over speed, Proton is the most credible option.

Private Internet Access (PIA) — Best Value Server Coverage

PIA has the largest server count of any provider — over 35,000 servers, which sounds impressive but mostly translates to "you're rarely on a congested server." Speed retention is decent. Long history, good track record.

It's cheaper than NordVPN long-term, but you give up about 25% of speed retention to save $0.46/month. For most streamers, NordVPN's performance is worth the premium.

VPNs we tested and dropped

We tested 9 providers total. The 4 not in the top list got cut for specific reasons:

• CyberGhost: Decent speed (680 Mbps) but kill switch failed our drop tests 3 times. Leaks real IP for 6-8 seconds after VPN drops.
• TunnelBear: Limited servers (47 countries), no streaming-optimized features, slow speeds (520 Mbps avg).
• Hotspot Shield: Fast on premium servers but the "free" tier is so limited it's essentially useless. Premium tier overpriced ($7.99/mo).
• Hola VPN: Avoid. Hola routes your traffic through other users' connections — the opposite of privacy. Listed only as a warning.

VPN setup for streaming apps

Firestick + IPTV

Install NordVPN from the Amazon App Store. Open it, sign in, connect to a server in your country. Enable Auto-Connect and the Kill Switch. Then install your IPTV player (we recommend TiviMate). The IPTV traffic now routes through the VPN tunnel — your ISP only sees encrypted traffic to a NordVPN server.

VPN features that actually matter (and ones that don't)

Matter:

• Kill switch — non-negotiable. Without one, you leak real IP every time the VPN drops.
• No-logs policy with independent audit — the policy means nothing without third-party verification.
• WireGuard support — significantly faster than older protocols. NordLynx, Lightway, OpenVPN-modernized — all variants are fine.
• Native Firestick / Android TV apps — sideloaded apps are unreliable.
• Split tunneling — lets you keep some apps off the VPN (useful if your bank flags VPN logins).

Doesn't matter as much as marketing suggests:

• "X,000+ servers" — past 2,000, more servers add nothing. PIA has 35,000 and isn't faster than NordVPN's 6,300.
• "AES-256 encryption" — every legitimate VPN uses this. It's not a differentiator.
• "Military-grade security" — meaningless marketing phrase. Means AES-256.
• "Anonymous" — no VPN makes you anonymous from a sufficiently motivated adversary. Reduces casual tracking, doesn't beat a court order.
• Country count — once you can reach servers in your home country + the few you care about (US, UK, common EU), more is just marketing.

Is using a VPN legal?

In almost every country: yes. The US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, all of Latin America — using a VPN is fully legal. Companies, journalists, and millions of regular users do it daily.

Exceptions: China bans VPNs, Russia heavily restricts them, North Korea / Iran / Belarus / Turkmenistan have various levels of restriction. If you're in one of those countries, this is not the article for you.

What you do through the VPN is the legal question. Streaming licensed content (Netflix, Sling, YouTube TV, a paid IPTV provider) is straightforwardly legal. Streaming pirated content is not — and a VPN reduces but doesn't eliminate legal exposure. As always, this isn't legal advice.
